The Goguikian Foundation held a Goguikian Foundation Parents Night at the Harboyan school in Zalka. This event which attracted the parents of 11th and 12th graders as well as many students, show cased the importance parents give to their children’s education.

Rita Boyadjian , the principal of Harboyan school welcomed all and especially thanked parents for being there and showing that they give importance to their children’s education and major of study. She then thanked the Foundation for the program that encourages public sector participation and invited Hasmig Donoyan-Nalbandian the Foundation Social Worker to make her presentation.

The Foundation Director, Soheila Y. Hayek in her turn acknowledged the effort parents had put into being there and congratulated them on being actively involved in their children’s future. She stressed the importance of active participation and briefly differentiated the current political presence of Lebanese Armenians in the government with participation in the civil sector.

news26Dr. Berj Hatjian the Director General of the Ministry of the Environment was the guest speaker and he explained further the process of entering the public sector through the Civil Services Board exams and the nature of promotions and remuneration in the that sector. He gave the example of a young Lebanese Armenian lady who had just passed the Civil Service Board entrance exam and was about to be assigned to the Ministry of the Environment without the need for ‘’wasta’’. Dr. Hatjian stressed that the presence of the parents was a very important indicator of the importance they place on their children’s future and encouraged the students present to think actively about their educational choices and not be swayed into the classic choices of medicine, engineering and Law.

There was a questions and answers session following Dr. Hatjian’s presentation and the evening ended with a small buffet of refreshments.
